Private Farms Text Box: Growers of WISIC Text Box: Ginning Text Box: Seed cotton is transported by trailers to our Ginnery for separation of lint and seed. The cotton is weighed and inspected to determine its moisture content and the amount of foreign matter in the load. The cotton goes through a ‘drying’ process where it is spread out and ‘aired’ to reduce its moisture content. The cotton is then conveyed to ‘gin stands’ by the workers and loaded into small holding bins. It is pulled into the machine by a large toothed belt, which processes it to loosen the seeds.  Lint remaining in the gin is fed through a large comb and deposited into another bin at the front of the gin, removed by hand and transported to the chute and into the baler. This method of processing of WISIC facilitates and improves its fiber quality and produces about 1 bale every 2 hours. Ginned cotton is then compressed into bales weighing approximately 500 pounds. Text Box: Seeds   Text Box: Finished Product Text Box: The cotton seeds drop into a type of funnel shaped tube that is situated under the machine; onto a conveyor belt located on the floor below the gins. These seeds are then bagged and sold as animal feed. Seeds selected for planting go through a further process to remove any extra lint still attached, these are then sorted into ‘good seed’ for planting and ‘bad seed’ which is also sold as animal feed. Text Box: The baled cotton is shipped to our textiles mill in Switzerland where it is spun into various types of yarn and then woven or knitted into fabrics. At our request, specific fabrics and yarns are returned to Barbados and sold by the meter to interior and clothing designers.
